- 1. What is the dead link checker and what does it do?
|
The Dead Link Checker regularly visits all of the links on your pages verifying that the site is available.
The dead link checker will only flag a link as dead after the link shows 4 consecutive failures.
Dead links must be true 404 errors. A placeholder page indicating the document no longer exists won't trigger a 404. The page must be completely missing in order to trigger a 404.
404's will only be counted from the root level. If you have a dead link in your account that is at domain.com/subdirectory/filename.html, it will not be detected as a dead link.
If a link indicates 404 after 4 rechecks, LinksManager will then show the link in your account as DEADLINK in red text.
Dead links can be the result of a typo in the URL, server problems, or a page could be missing on the server where the site lives.
Dead Link Checker only visits the url associated with each link. The Dead Link Checker is not a spider or crawler.
LinksManager does not delete dead links from your account, but it does temporarily remove dead links from your links pages while they are dead. The system alerts you to any dead links it has found and will show you any dead links in your Active Links.

- 2. How often does the dead link checker look for dead links?
|
The Dead Link Checker checks for dead links weekly. The frequency decreases uniquely for each link that remains active in your account over time. If a link ever becomes dead in the future, the checking frequency for that link increases automatically.

- 3. Will dead links appear on my links pages?
|
No - dead links do not appear on your links pages unless you choose to show dead links from the dead link checker control page in your account. The dead link will remain in your account, but will be temporarily removed from your links pages until it becomes visible again. Once the dead link checker finds the link available again, the link will automatically reappear on your links pages.

- 4. Why does the dead link checker report a dead link that is working?
|
The Dead Link Checker will wait to report that a link is dead until it cannot reach the link after 4 concurrent checks with failure. Then it will report the deadlink. However, if a site comes online after the last check but before it is checked again, the link checker may report the link is dead when it is indeed working fine.
Because of this, we suggest you try visiting sites listed as dead before deleting them from your account.
Also note that the Dead Link checker will also report that a link is dead when typing mistakes have been made during submission, as it will attempt to goto where it's been directed. For example, if the webmaster enters for his url: http:/website.com, this url will be listed as dead because the http:// is missing a forward slash.
